Blue Moon Burgers

The last excursion we took the boys on this year was a trip to Boeing’s Museum of Flight. Well worth the admission price, it’s a great way to kill a couple of hours or even a whole day. Highly recommended. And speaking of recommendations, we ended up eating at Blue Moon Burgers, the best burger place in town, imho.

smallfeature_2.jpgWe actually decided to go here after a recommendation from a stranger. They boys had wanted to go to Red Mill Burgers based on one of those travel shows, Man vs Food I think it was. Anyway, when we got there, we found out it was closed on Mondays. While standing around looking like out-of-towners wondering where to go, some dude walking by suggested Blue Moon. Sounded like a plan, so after the museum trip we headed to the South Lake Union location.

The first thing you notice upon entering is that the place has a real local joint vibe to it. Nice wooden table and chairs, posters on the wall, very cool. Heading up to the counter we placed our orders.

Jake went with the BBQ burger, Marc the bacon cheese burger, Beth the cheese burger, and ever the adventurer, I plunged in with the Code Blue burger. The Code Blue is 2 beef patties, 3 slices of bacon, 2 slices of cheese, sweet red onions, pickle and peanut butter. And man is it tasty. Wow. The peanut butter melts giving a richness to the burger that you have to taste to believe. Just incredible. Tasting the plain cheeseburger was bliss. You really taste the beef in this one and man o man was it good. To be honest, all 4 burgers were perfect, as were the fair fries and onion rings. You guys know what I mean by “fair fries”, those thin, long, greasy, salty strips of goodness. Limp and luscious baby! Dipped into Blue Moon sauce, I could make a meal of them alone. YUM!

Okay, so what the hell makes the place so good? Personally, I chalk it up to several things. First off the decor of the place. Clean and inviting, it made you want to come in and sit down. Next, the person at the counter. Cheerful, knowledgeable, and willing to put up with 4 newbies trying to decide what to get. There are the prices. Extremely reasonable, given the quality of the food. Spot on actually. Then you have the choices. You aren’t locked into just beef here. Every single one of their burger choices can be made with chicken breast, grilled gardenburger, salmon patty, turkey patty or a black bean gardenburger. Fish eaters and veggie folks rejoice! You found a place where you can hang out with your meat loving friends and everyone can get what they want. Food detente indeed.

Finally there is the beef itself. Blue Moon Burgers only uses beef from Thundering Hooves Ranch in the Walla Walla valley. The livestock is raised on a 4th generation family farm and is 100% grass fed on organic pastures. And I’m here to tell you that you really can taste the difference. Without a doubt, the most flavorful burger patty I’ve tasted. Anywhere. Oh, and before I forget… many, many thanks to that random dude. Good call man, damn good call.

Blue Moon Burgers has 2 locations, 920 Republican St., with a second location in Fremont at 703 N 34th St. We ate at the South Lake Union one, but my guess is that both locations are the same, quality wise.

10 patties out of 10. I cannot recommend the place enough.
